In Liberia, K. C. Brown Nursery and Primary School plans to expand its education to junior high school students as the Lord provides.

The school, a ministry of Revelation Baptist Church in Lower Margibi County, Liberia,  teaches about 200 children in preschool through sixth grade. Thomas Yeeson, pastor of the church, and his wife, Doris, founded the school in 2010 for children in the church and community.

Even though the church was “a struggling ministry” at the time and “wasn’t in a position financially to support the process of starting a grade school,” the congregation “graciously accepted the idea,” Thomas says. Members of the church, including Thomas, became trained in Christian education and now serve as teachers.

Those teachers are paid $61 a month, “greatly below the salary grade of civil servants in Liberia according to the labor law,” Thomas says. Civil servants and teachers in Liberia are usually paid at least $150 a month by the Liberian government. However, two fully paid support staff members help take care of the school facilities, which consist of the church and a private home—a three-bedroom house with two porches and a sitting room.

Sixty percent of the students attend the school free of charge, without registration or tuition payments, “because many parents can’t afford fees due to economic constrains coupled with COVID-19 pandemic,” Thomas says.

The school makes use of agriculture to support itself. For example, the school maintains a sweet corn farm, a piggery, and charcoal and gardening projects.

Over the years, parents have wished the school taught their children through junior high school.

Even though the school operates “under extreme constrains,” including lack of space, noise control, and funds, the school aims to expand its education to teach seventh and eighth grades as the Lord provides.
