Liberian President visits Calvary Baptist, Monrovia

The president of the Republic of Liberia, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf worshiped with the Calvary Baptist Church on Sunday, June 20TH 2010, during its second Fathers’ Day service. Despite the heavy down pour of rain that Sunday morning, the president made it to the church and was met on arrival by Pastor G. Larque Vaye and members of the Deacons Board. In his welcome remarks, Pastor Vaye thanked the president for the visit and used the occasion to commend her for ably handling the affairs of the nation.

He also told the president that since her election in 2005, the Calvary Baptist Church has continued to pray for her and the government in obedience to the word of God (Rom.13). The senior pastor also commended the president for appointing some of his church members to serve in key positions in her government. They include, Counselor J. Daku Mulbah , County Attorney for Montserrado County, Sister Suzana Vaye, Commissioner, Land Commission, and Brother Othello Weh, Deputy Director General, Civil  Service Agency.

During the program, Mr. Nathaniel Gaye, Sr. was certificated and appreciated for donating ten acres of land to the church for development purpose. In his sermon, entitled, The Characteristics of a True Father, Rev. Wallah  Wilsitoe of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Virginia, Monrovia, called on all Christian fathers to be compassionate, loving and humble.

Following the message, Pastor Vaye led the ministers to offer special prayers for the president. In her remarks, President Sirleaf thanked the church for the prayers and called on both fathers and mothers to instill biblical traditional family values in the children.  In a rather emotional tone, the president appealed to the church to pray  for the government and encourage church members working in both public  and private sectors to be honest and dedicated to the  service of the of the nation. President Sirleaf (a Methodist) is the first female president of Liberia.

Since its establishment in 1962, this is the first time for the president of the nation to visit the Calvary Baptist Church.
