Chirchir Children’s Home
Naibor, Kenya
by Paula Doaks, former missionary to Kenya
Naibor (NAY-bor) is a small village in Kenya, East Africa. The people are poor and live in homes made of mud and sticks with tin roofs and dirt floors. The dry land makes it hard to grow food there. Most of the people take care of cattle, sheep, and goats to make a living.
How the Children’s Home Got Started
Pastor John Chirchir (CHUR-chur) grew up in Naibor. When he was young, a missionary came to the village. John heard God’s Word and became a Christian. He studied the Word of God and now is the pastor of Tumaini (Too-MAHN-ee) Baptist Church. Pastor John and his wife, Mary, have six children.
Drunkenness and violence cause many problems in Naibor. There’s another problem too: People are dying of AIDS and leaving behind many orphaned children. Grandparents or other relatives must take care of the orphans, but many families are very poor. Some children have no one to care for them. Pastor John wanted to help these children, so he and his wife began to take some of them into their home.
Meet Moses
Moses Osono is one of the children who live with Pastor John’s family. He is thirteen years old. Both of Moses’ parents are dead. Before going to the children’s home, Moses lived with his uncle and aunt, but they could no longer care for him. Now that he lives at the children’s home, he gets to go to school. He says he likes to study English.
Now Moses has a place to live, food to eat, clothes, and parents. He is also learning about how much God loves him. He helps around the children’s home by fetching water from the river and herding goats when he is on school holiday. God has blessed Moses.
