Jahzjet Children Outreach Mission
Monrovia, Liberia
by Jefferson Zeon, director, Jahzjet Orphanage

The Republic of Liberia became a country over 160 years ago. The country was started by freed slaves from the United States. The name “Liberia” means “liberty.” Sadly, the Liberian people fought a war against each other, as different groups tried to take over the government. Thousands of people were killed during the war.

A baby boy named Nyanzabah Quaye (NEYE-an-za-baa kway) was badly burned on his legs when a bomb hit his parents’ house and set it on fi re. The baby’s grandmother took the boy to find medical help, but the place she took him to could not help him, so he was sent to a hospital.

His right leg was so badly hurt that the doctors had to amputate it, or cut it off. Nyanzabah had two other operations to straighten his left leg. He was given an artifi cial, or fake, right leg and a crutch to help him get around. After he left the hospital, Nyanzabah moved to the Jahzjet (JOZ-jet) Orphanage.

The Jahzjet Orphanage is in Monrovia, Liberia. About seventy children live there. The orphanage has a school too.

Nyanzabah has been at the Jahzjet Orphanage for four years. During that time none of his relatives have visited him. Nyanzabah is now fi ve years old. He continues to live at the orphanage. He is thankful, friendly, living a normal life, and determined not to allow his legs to stop him from learning.

Nyanzabah is blessed to live with Christians who love him and teach him about Jesus. Because of the orphanage, Nyanzabah has a good place to live, food to eat, and other things that he needs— including going to school. Many children in Liberia do not have these blessings.
