Ooga Thomas is a pastor from Independent Faith Baptist Churches of Kenya who works in a slum area called the River (as there is a river, which frequently floods, next to the residents’ tin homes). He is trying to start a church in this area through a preschool. Chris Hindal, director of GARBC International Ministries, and his wife, Deb, visited in April and shared Wordless bracelets with the approximately 20 children in attendance. The school’s visuals are limited, with some made out of burlap. Pastor Thomas writes:

Attendance at our small school has increased to 70. It has been very difficult to cope. Last Thursday two more children came, and I had to turn them away. As you saw, that place was too small even for 20 children. I went back yesterday to look for a place to move to, and we were able to get a plot with three spacious room that can accommodate 70 children. It even has enough space for them to play. The owner agreed to rent it to us at a cost of Kenya shilling 20,000 per month.

Pray with us as we trust the Lord to provide for the rent so that these children can have a place to learn basic education and the Word of God.

I had been thinking to reduce the number of children to 30, but I realize the children’s ministry is the most important. These children come from broken families, alcoholic parents, and single parents. The Lord has brought them to us to take care of them. We urgently need two helpers. We thank God that one of our members who is a trained teacher has been with them even though the church  cannot pay her. We hired two helpers when you came, but the church was not able to pay them.

May the Lord bless us as you stand with us in prayer.

Till He comes,
Rev. Ooga Thomas
